The Telephone Consumer Protection Act

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) was passed by Congress in 1991 and specifically prohibits any calls using an automatic dialing system. The act also applies to unsolicited text messages. Individuals or businesses that place illegal robocalls or robotexts can be held liable for between $500 and $1,500 in damages per unsolicited call or text message.

Although predictive dialers, auto-dialers, and robocalls made without your consent are illegal under the TCPA, many companies continue to use them because consumers do not take any action against these unlawful practices.
